Work with local Community

HIV/AIDS Prevention

IAD is working for HIV/AIDS prevention for the last 7 years. This programme is done among Commercial sex workers, Homo Sexuals, Migrant labors and clients of Sex workers.

900 sex workers, 1180 homosexuals, 400 Migrant labors and 350 clients of sex workers were identified by IAD and given HIV/AIDS awareness. Major means of HIV/AIDS prevention programme is Peer Education, Behavior Change communication, STD care and condom programming. The permanent clients of 50 street based Commercial Sex Workers were identified and motivated to begin a life together

Street Children

IAD is working for the street children since 2000. Mainstreaming street children is the major objective behind the programme.

Major activities:

  1. Multi Grade Learning Centre

IAD is running a multi grade learning centre for street children. Activity oriented non formal education is given to the street children. Importance is given to the integrated development of child in this programme.  

  1. Mainstream schooling

IAD is admitting children to mainstream schools after training them in MGLC for one year.

  1. Awareness creation on sexual abuse, HIV/AIDS prevention.

Sexual harassment is commonly experienced by most of the street children. IAD focuses to educate those children to protect themselves from sexual abuse and exposure to HIV/AIDS. 

5. Self help group

A self help group is formed among these children with the major objective to develop thrift and thereby rehabilitation.

       

IAD PLUS

IAD Plus is a self help peer group organization of HIV infected widows and their children of Kasaragod comprising 75 members. Major activities of IAD Plus are as follows:

  1. Stigma Elimination

These programmes are intended to remove the stigma attached to HIV infected people in the society. The programme is conducted by HIV infected person called ‘Positive Speaker’. More than 400 stigma elimination programmes were conducted so far.

  1. Food Security

HIV infection coupled with poverty leads to nutritional deficiency. IAD Plus started the distribution of nutritional food materials every month for HIV infected people. This initiative influenced the local self governments like Jilla Panchayath and Kasaragod Municipality to start nutritious food programme for HIV infected people.

  1. Medical Support

Þ    Medical support is given to HIV infected people through IAD Plus. Volunteers of IAD Plus campaign at Taluk hospital, district hospital and private clinics for the medicinal needs of the members. Terminally ill patients are given care and support.

Þ    IAD Plus members are trained on medicinal plant cultivation, preparation of medicines and are motivated to cultivate the medicinal plants at their backyard to meet their own medical needs. The excess raw materials are marketed through the group.

  1. Alternative income generation programme

·        1.Garment making unit

IAD Plus started a garment making unit. In the beginning two months’ training was given to the members. With the financial support from Syndicate Bank, garment making unit was established. Garment Production and marketing is involved in this process. 10 HIV infected widows are rehabilitated through this programme.  

·        Xerox machine

As part of the rehabilitation, Xerox machine is given to one HIV infected widow
